Happy Mother's Day!

As regular readers will already know, my grandmother played a very significant role in my life and the work that I do. But with Mother’s Day fast approaching, I would be remiss if I didn’t share stories of my mother, as well.

With five daughters, she didn’t have a lot of time on her hands, so she’d stay up late at night sewing clothing for us girls, and, like my grandmother, she loved to embroider. She carried so much wisdom passed down to her from her mother. As children, we didn’t appreciate it, but in adulthood, it’s something my sisters and I have come to treasure.

My mother often told me that time goes by more quickly as you get older. At the time, I brushed her off, as the young are wont to do. Oh mom!

But now, standing on the other side, I would love to tell her how right she was, about that and so many other things. I shouldn’t be surprised; she was a very talented woman who excelled at anything and everything she put her mind to.

A mother is the heart of her family, one who nourishes with hearty food and kind words, provides wisdom to those who are lost, and always has time to wipe away tears or offer an encouraging smile.

My mother’s love poured through her hands into the clothes she sewed for me, and I hear the wisdom of her words, so many years later, as if they were stitched upon the fabric of my life.
